Ep. 5: The Temple of Justice

After a jury in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, convicted Tom Jones of murdering local reporter Hansel Batten, Tom hired a new defense attorney named Earle Wingo. Wingo appealed Tom’s conviction to the Mississippi Supreme Court. While waiting on the high court’s ruling, he defended Venie Jones, Tom’s wife, when prosecutors took her to court for Hansel’s murder, too. Wingo’s aggressive style changed the way people thought of the case.
